The city center of Vienna is transformed into a partly ‘oversized’ open air party platform with a varicolored music- and show program from traditional music, pop, rock, blues, funk & soul and electronic beats.
The program already starts in the late afternoon on December 31st and ends between 02.00 and 04.00 hours on January 01st. It is supported by the most well known radio stations in Austria like Radio Wien, Ö3, Superfly, Radio Arabella and their individual acts.

In 2011 the program shows acts like ‘Saturday D.I.S.C.O. Fever Live’, a Madonna Cover Show called ‘Like a Virgin’, ‘DIVAS of POP’ and several DJ collective acts.

The ‘Silvesterpfad’ is complemented by more than 80 gastronomical spots and stands and is definitely a highlights for the party-people from Vienna and those who stay in Vienna but still are unsure how & where to party during NYE …

We recommend … do not miss this one!

Waves Vienna 2011 was definitely a great success, over 8000 people did visit the different festival acts. It has shown that Vienna has all what is needed for such a festival: a strong geographic position, x-ordinary venues, a ‘music freak’ audience and last but not least a strong national music scenery.

“Anyone who thinks that Austria´s capital isn´t a rock and roll town should visit Waves next year. Venues on boats with a great view of the cutting-edge new Vienna skyline, impressive local talent that none of us foreigners previously knew anything about, plus a well-crafted bill of big names and newcomers from as far afield as Montreal, Bratislava and Brighton. Great city. Great festival.” Si Hawkins (Clash Magazine, London GB)

The Ring, Vienna´s Casual Luxury Hotel is looking forward to be official VIP hotel again at Waves Vienna 2012. We welcome such a festival and are already curious.

This music event took place for the first time in October 2009 and has developed itself within the festival industry in the past 2 years. The overall goal of this festival is to bring innovative artists and musicians to Vienna and also show how well the national music- and club culture has been developed itself in the last few years.

This year many events take place in ‘on- and off-locations’ like Porgy & Bess, WUK, MQ – Museumsquartier, MAK, Pratersauna and the Filmcasino, as well as like in 2010 a cooperation with Sneakerness’, a sneaker convention we already mentioned on our blog.

The 2011 invited artists and musicians for RUN VIE are again very different in style and offer a wide variety of music, from the ‘local heroes from Vienna’ of the label Affine Records Dorian Concept, Ogris Debris, Cid Rim and The Clonious, the post-dubstep formation Darkstar from the label WARP from London, the 2 UK acts Girl Unit and Egyptrixx which were very popular with their label Night Slugs in 2011.

RUN VIE was able to present to Europe premiere of the music coverage ‘Beats, Rhymes & Life: The Travels of a Tribe called Quest’ in Vienna at the Film Casino. This coverage was awarded at the Sundance Film Festival. This documentation shows various interviews and private live recordings of the actor Mike Rapaport about the legendary band A Tribe Called Quest. Most probably the highlight of RUN VIE 2011!

This year’s acts of RUN VIE are all very promising … for all MUSIC FREAKS, do not miss this one!!!!

For detailed information about the acts, tickets and locations please do visit www.runvie.at!

It is time to have a closer look at the music festivals that will take place in 2011 in Austria again, and, surprisingly there are more festivals as we thought. Pretty complicated to list all of them, we would end up with an article that might takes days to read. Hence we decided to list the most interesting and largest ones, and also try to answer our question if music does set the tone in Austria in summer 2011. The festivals we have taken a closer look at have already been communicated but not all of them do already show all line-ups on their websites, so more surprises to come.

Let us start with June, and present to you a music festival (or happening?) that we thought we should mention: ‘Springfestival’ in Graz, which just took place from June 2nd to 4th. With 10 years and a nomination for ‘Best European Indoor Festival’ under its belt, Springfestival has emerged from the ‘Noughties’ as one of the leading and most cutting-edge European festivals. During the day the brightest ‘digital minds’ deliver talks on electronic art, design and technology at the integrated conference, during the nights Springfestival brings several line-ups of star DJ’s, acclaimed lives acts and upcoming talents, at 6 stunning venues and urban spaces across Graz.

The first big and well known music festival is ‘Novarock’, it takes place from June 11 th to 13th in Nickelsdorf (Pannonia Fields II) and for 2011 the current headliners are Iron Maiden, System of a Down, Linkin Park and Volbeat. With more than 30 acts and more than 200.000 visitors this is definitely the largest open air music festival in Austria.

The second big one in June calls itself ‘Urban Art Forms Festival’, the venue was ‘Wiesen’ until 2010, now in 2011 the venue is ‘Arena Nova Playgrounds’ at Wiener Neustadt. In 2011 it takes place from June 16th to 19th and currently this festival shows more than 30 line-ups. This festival is, according to the website, Europe’s leading audio visual festival and is visited by more than 36.000 visitors every year. The line-up for this year shows acts from Paul Kalkenbrenner, Deichkind, Deadmau5, Fat Boy Slim and Vitalic.

A well-known festival in Vienna is the ‘Donauinselfest’, which takes place since 1984, always by the end of June, open air with no entry fee. With about 3 million visitors during 3 days it is the largest open air festival in Europe. This festival does not only show music acts but also different shows, product presentations, sport acts and so on. The line-up for 2011 shows bands like Europe, Söhne Mannheims, Die Happy but also acts from Sido and Roots Manuva. In 2011 it takes place from June 24th to 26th and believe us, it is a great festival!

Two big festivals in July are ‘Lovely Days’ on July 8th with acts like Santana, Mother’s Finest and Ten Years After as well as ‘Forestglade’ on July 16th with acts like The Pogues and Airbourne. In August 2011 we see the following festivals: ‘Stuck 2011’ in Salzburg with several international acts and DJ’s, ‘Sunsplash Reloaded’ on August 27th, with a focus on reggae, ska and latin and line-ups like Alpha Blondy, Jimmie Cliff and Capleton as well as ‘Soundslike Open Air Festival’ which takes place on August 26th and 27th in Graz. This seems to be a new festival, the website shows some interesting acts and line-ups, we are indeed curious.

Another and also big festival is the ‘FM4 Frequency Festival’ at the Green Park St. Pölten. This festival does exist since 2001 and is constantly growing, not only the number of visitors but also the level of acts. For 2011 you can enjoy The Chemical Brothers, Kasabian, Dropkick Murphys, Deichkind, Kaiserchiefs and Stereo MC’s. And we close our personal overview for 2011 with the ‘Two Days a Week Festival’, with a focus on alternative and rock music one can see acts like The Offspring, Alkbottle, Beatsteaks and Paradise Lost.

Does music set the tone in Austria in summer 2011?
If you are interested in music we think it does, we counted the total number of acts in June, July, August and September … sorry, too much, so for us music does set the tone, we hope in combination with sun, party and lots of fun … we just booked the 1st tickets!

Who are you?
I am Christine; one of the founders and creative directors of C-Heads Magazine.

2. What do you like about what you do?
Being creative… This is what I love since being a child. I always used to draw, to sing, to play instruments or to write…Also a good thing is to get in touch with lots of different people around the world. And also working with people, who feel the same passion for art like me.

3. What don’t you like about what you do?
Hm, this is a difficult question. I think there is nothing I don´t like…. maybe sometimes there is too much work, but on the other side this is also a good point. Haha…

4. Please tell us about ‘C-Heads Magazine’, include your strategy and tell us about your future goals and target groups

C-Heads Magazine is all about photography, music, art, fashion, trends and lifestyle. We show talents, newcomers and well-known artists from all over the world. We think, that art is an important part of life. The playful side of life. Breathtaking pictures tell stories. Music that touches and supplies the soundtrack of life. Fashion that can show, who you are and what you want to express. Art that shows our individuality and connects us to each other.

Our target group are people around the world who are interested in any kind of art. A big target group of course are artists themselves, like stylists, make-up artists, fashion designers, musicians, illustrator and so on… the list is long.

A special point in our magazine is, that there is a chance for everyone to get into the magazine. This is our Be-Inside concept. We don´t mind f.e. if you are a star photographer or someone who just loves doing photography during your free time. When at the end the pictures are what we like you can make it into the magazine.
Future Goals: it would be great if we could get more and more well-known and of course it would be great if we can continue doing what we love and live from it. We would love to have C-Heads Magazine also in a printed version at one point! But this is really talking about the future.

5. How is ‘C-Heads Magazine’ positioned?
The good thing is, C-Heads Magazine was the first Austrian Online Magazine. We started this project, when the idea was still fresh and new. So we are like a primary rock in that scene.

6. Are you working with blogs/websites and if yes, what is your favourite one and why?
Being honest, I am not so much into blogs any more. I owned a blog myself some time ago. But at the moment there are too many of them, and most of them are repeating the information.

7. Your experiences with the creative industry in general?
In my opinion the international creative industry is mostly very professional , well organised and open minded. So i have lots of good experiences with it.

8. Which future trends do you see for the creative industry, especially in Austria?
I think that Austria´s creative scene is going to getting more and more attention in the future. There is a lot of potential in the new generation. I hope that the scene will be able to progress by opening their borders. Working together more and more tolerance between the different scenes is an important part of that.

9. Your TOP 3 magazines and why?
TUSH Magazine is awesome. Full with very good high quality and innovative fashion photography. I also like ID Magazine and V Magazine. They are always so colourful and fresh in a way.

10. Any comments you want to share with us?
Yeah, maybe strange, but everyone should try to make this planet into a heavens place…. so it´s all about love. Thanks a lot for the interview!

All know that Vienna is a music capital, all year around, many musicians play in Vienna throughout the year, either as single act or as part of one of the main festivals, of which the Jazz Fest Wien is one.

2010 is the 20th anniversary of the Jazz Fest Wien, and again the organization was able to bring international top stars, in order to present a music which performance is increasing year after year. Jazz music is lived through and by personalities and one can view how jazz music performed with these personalities, bringing a list of new talents through the past few years. Also the oldest but also newest music of the 20th century gets highlighted by the fact that it integrates other music arts, to create new music and on the other hand influence other music arts again.

Top acts of the Jazz Fest Wien 2010 that show this performance are Jamie Cullum, the young british musician that combines piano with punk and pop-appeal, the legendary Jeff Beck, a “jazz artist” who combines blues, pop, rock and jazz to a unique kind of music. Also a very warm welcome to Gilles Peterson, an artist that brought back jazz into danceable music in the eighties, called “Acid Jazz”, and during the Jazz Fest Wien he will work together with a young Cuban artist, someone who inspired the listeners of the Bueno Vista Social Club as much as many piano players did: Roberto Fonseca. British meets Cuban spirit … as much exciting as the music of the French electro-specialist AIR or the new choir project of the voice acrobat Bobby McFerrin. A famous legend is definitely Herbie Hancock, his act will definitely be a highlight and again place itself among the legends that performed at the Jazz Fest Wien, legends like Dizzy Gillespie, Miles Davis or Santana. Besides male acts Jazz Fest Wien also focuses on women. The Canadian singer and guitar player Terez Montcalm will raise the female quote, and Juliette Greco and Melody Gardot will show that the French “chanson” is not far away from celebrating jazz. We should also not forget Randy Crawford. With Al Green a soul legend will perform in the Vienna State Opera and with the Austrian artist Wolfgang Muthspiel, who won the European Jazz Prize, we will see a European art of playing jazz. More to come and more to see, that is for sure, all artists, legendary or not, creative or traditional, all will again raise the importance of not only jazz in general but also the Jazz Fest Wien, this year again with a huge and interesting program.

Sun, lots of music and party. Although the weather is not yet like it should be, we should have a closer look at the festival season for 2010 in Austria. And get really excited and ready to book a ticket. Some events have already been communicated and show their lineups.

The ‘FM 4 Frequency Festival’ in St. Pölten is celebrating its 10th anniversary this year, a reason to celebrate to the max. The organization was able to contract the german legend band ‘Die Toten Hosen’. This year from August 19th to 21th a large variety of musical entertainment will be offered on seven different stages (www.frequency.at).

For party people looking for a festival ‘out in the suburbs’ the area ‘Waldviertel’ offers on June 02 ‘Rock am Teich’, a great venue with open-air and Red Bull stage, beach zone and party tents (www.rock-am-teich.at).

A big event is happening from June 11-13 in Nickelsdorf, it is called ‘Nova Rock’ and exists since 2005. This festival draws up to 150.000 people over a 3-day period and is definitely Austria’s biggest rock music festival and also one of the largest in Europe. The confirmed bands for 2010 are Rammstein, Green Day, Slayer, Deichkind, the Austrian upcoming band The Sorrow, Bullet for my Valentine and Beatsteaks. There will also be an unplugged performance of Sportfreunde Stiller and for those who like real hard rock, get ready for Heaven and Hell (www.novarock.at).

A small focus on a new festival called ‘Paradise Festival’, cosmic and trance music to create summer hypnosis. This festival is held from July 01-04 in Falkenstein. Look at their lineup! Some great bands and DJ do perform on a ‘dream stage’, a ‘moon stage’ and a ‘sun stage’ (www.paradise-festival.at).

Again in St. Pölten the next festival is called ‘Beatpatrol’, which will take place from July 23-24, their program shows acts bands & DJ’s like Faithless, IAMX, Felix Da Housecat, The Freestylers, Paul van Dyk, Kosheen and Stereo MC’s. Funny, like the Paradise Festival they also have some nice stages: a ‘sunshine stage’, a ‘good morning stage’ and a ‘samsara outdoor stage’, have a look at www.beatpatrol.at.

Two larger and traditional festivals do boost music & party in Wiesen, the first one is called ‘Lovely Days’, it exists since 2006 and does bring some really big names on stage, confirmed for 2010 are Uriah Heep and the Manfred Mann’s Earth Band (www.lovelydays.at), the second one is called ‘Eristoff Track Urban Art Forms Festival presented by Electronic Beats’, also a promising festival. Moonbootica will perform with their special ‘four-to-the-floor’ sound, a combination out of techno, house and big beat. Friends of Drum’n’Bass are happy to see the following names: Shimon and Dirtyphonics (www.uaf-festival.at).

Surely we will see a few smaller events showing up for 2010 for the larger cities in Austria, but the ones already communicated do promise soft and hard beats, fun, party and a lot of excitement!

Vienna Concert Hall, October 14th 2009
An impressive range of film composers will contribute to the second “Hollywood in Vienna” Film Music Gala, which takes place in the Vienna Concert Hall on October 14th, with the prestigious Vienna Radio Symphony Orchestra.

After the first “Hollywood in Vienna” film music gala concert in 2007, the city of music is once more celebrating its musical connection with the dream factory on October 14th, 2009. With this concert series, the City of Vienna honors and recognizes the achievements of its Viennese composers, who profoundly contributed to the history of film music – with Max Steiner and Erich Wolfgang Korngold on top of the list – and the art of film music in general.

In order to emphasize that film music is just as valuable as “serious” classical music, the “Hollywood in Vienna” concert series takes place in the prestigious Vienna concert hall, interpreted by the highly regarded Vienna Radio Symphony Orchestra and broadcast via several European radio stations. Furthermore, the City of Vienna now starts to award the most important film composers of our time with the newly established “Max Steiner Award“.

The first film composer to receive this award by the mayor of Vienna at the “Hollywood in Vienna” concert on October 14th is the world renowned 5-time Oscar winning film composer John Barry. Few composers of the past half-century have enjoyed as much popular success or worldwide influence as John Barry, who has written some of the most memorable movie music of our time. Barry will accept the award in person and will take over the baton himself to conduct highlights of his film music, like his legendary “Goldfinger“.
The Gala´s host is American born star conductor John Axelrod, who will lead through the evening. The John Barry tribute program will be presented by guest conductor Nicholas Dodd, who is also known as conductor and arranger of the past Bond scores by David Arnold, such as “Casino Royale” and “Quantum of Solace“.

The concert program will include some of the most famous film scores by John Barry, such as, “Out of Africa” and “Dances with Wolves” a “James Bond Suite”. David Arnold and Bond producer Barbara Broccoli will also fly to Vienna on this occasion and attend the concert.

Apart from Barry´s compositions the Radio-Symphony Orchestra Vienna will play several other film music highlights, from “Casablanca” and “Lawrence of Arabia” to “Seven years in Tibet“, “Silverado“, and “The Day after Tomorrow” – with the composers Bruce Broughton and Harald Kloser in attendance.

On October 9th & 10th 2009 John Barry, as well as Bruce Broughton, David Arnold, Nicholas Dodd and Austrian born Hollywood composer Harald Kloser will also take part in an International Film Music Symposium at the Vienna University for Music and Performing Arts.

Who are you?
My name is Anton Rigel, I´m owner of Evolution Entertainment, based in Germany. It’s a creative event and artist agency specialized in female DJs, musicians, dancers and other unique artists in the world.

2. What do you like about your work?
I like to work with young and talented women from Europe and Latin America to see how they grow international, being idols for many other young girls. I like travelling around the world, visiting new countries, meeting interested people with many ideas and much energy. It is always fantastic to see, how our artists entertain the people with their skills and talent.

3. What don’t you like about what you do?
That I haven’t got enough time to do make all my ideas come through, travelling with the artists and meeting my clients personally. I hate all the greed, envy and ignorance of some people in the music business. Promoter and club owner trying to earn the “big money” in a short time, not taking care of any new talents and local scene, also greedy people, making cheap and low budget drinking parties.

4. Please tell us about Evolution Music and your future goals?
We are one of the leading agencies specialized in female DJs, performing in the coolest clubs/parties worldwide. With female orchestral musicians playing Saxophone, Violin or Percussion, we offer our clients something new and different since 2009. They are playing the best of Lounge, Buddha-Art, World Music, Latin, Jazz, Party, Dance and Electronic Music. Our variable teams are perfect for every kind of event. Our brand “God is a DJane” is a very high quality product, designed to be performed in the best clubs and most important cities around the world. So far we had over 50 parties around the world the last 12 months. In August 2008 we had our first compilation “God is a DJane” Vol. 1. In April we will release our first single under G.I.A.D. and planning the next Mix House Compilation.

5. Are you working with other blogs and if yes, what is your favourite blog?
We are not working with other blogs. We as an agency are not really interested in fans and friends. We are present in networks like Myspace (www.myspace.com/evolutionagency) or Facebook. We have got a special kind of market and clients, they are informed by newsletters and other communication.

6. Your experiences with the overall music/DJ industry?
In the actual economic situation the competitions are becoming higher class, clubs owners are booking names and event brands, trying to get the maximum of guests and consumption. Publicity is getting more and more important, that’s why we started with the brand “God is a DJane” supporting talented and beautiful women.

7. What are your most favourite music labels?
Ministry of Sound, they are the leading music label for electronic music having one of the biggest distribution worldwide. With brands like Hedkandi or Ministry of Sound they are also the biggest event company in the world with big influence in the music industry, since more than 20 years.

8. Any comments you want to share with us?
“Music is the unique universal language, but women have the better vibes to mediate this feeling.!”
