“It’s the telling of a story predominantly visually, with clever lighting effects, with the highest rate of steps, gestures, looks attainable that say more than a thousand words.”
“Tanguera presents high-adrenaline choreography with its racy turns, its precise leg movements enhanced by lifts, jumps and kneeling turns.”
The Show
TANGUERA is not an ordinary tango show because Tanguera is more than just a dance. And still – Tanguera is essentially one thing only: tango. In Buenos Aires, its birthplace, Tanguera was celebrated with euphoric enthusiasm and experienced a record runtime here of 18 months after its premiere in 2002.
Tanguera is a group of 30 male and female dance virtuosos, prize-winning choreography that burns with passion by renowned tango star Mora Godoy and something no tango performance has dared to do: tell a story. With precise looks and gestures, with songs and with the all-consuming dance, Tanguera, the first tango musical ever, brings an authentic story of Buenos Aires at the turn of the century to life. The fate of many women told in the story of one woman, as simple and inescapable as desire and pain that meld to melancholy and passion in tango.
The Story
At the beginning of the 20th century, the young immigrant Giselle lands in La Boca, the infamous harbour district of Buenos Aires. Hundreds and thousands of immigrants eke out an existence there. Here the underworld is law and love is a service for sale. While closely entwined couples glide over hidden backyard cobbles and the planks of forbidden unsavoury bars for the amusement of the Bandoneons, Giselle, a celebrated tango dancer, experiences the dubious success in the glittering world of the cabaret. Seduced by the criminal Gaudencio and loved by the courageous harbour worker Lorenzo, she finally becomes the reason for a deadly knife fight between these two rivals.
Tanguera, the groundbreaking tango musical from Buenos Aires, has already been wildly celebrated in international centres such as Madrid, Miami and Tokyo and experienced glowing success under the patronage of Maestro Daniel Barenboim during its 2006 guest performance in Germany at the Hamburg Staatsoper and in 2007 and 2009 at the Staatsoper Unter den Linden in Berlin. Finally, at the season opening in 2008 of the Théâtre du Châtelet, Tanguera has put the audience in Paris into a state of ecstasy.
The show runs in Vienna from December 01- 20, 2009
The Ring Hotel, Vienna´s Casual Luxury Hotel, is partner of the Tanguera show.
